Plus Dane Housing SHDF Wave 2, The Welsh Streets, Liverpool – Next Energy Solutions

Delivered by Next Energy in collaboration with Plus Dane Housing, this retrofit project combined innovation and responsiveness to deliver real change – both to the properties and the lives of their residents. Initial assessments revealed widespread damp and mould in more than half the homes. Rather than allow delays, the team swiftly mobilised local specialists through a trusted supply chain, ensuring works could continue seamlessly.
With smart use of additional funding, 17 hard-to-let empty homes were upgraded with measures including insulation and new windows and ventilation, dramatically improving their energy efficiency and market appeal. Resident engagement was exemplary.
From multilingual ambassadors to tailored support for neurodiverse families, the team prioritised dignity, cultural sensitivity and comfort. For example, construction timelines were adapted to honour Ramadan. The local economy was front and centre. All the workforce and materials were sourced from the Liverpool city region, with more than 75% of works delivered directly in-house. A green skills careers event also helped to inspire the next generation of retrofit professionals.
“It’s toasty,” one resident said. “The difference was immediate. It’s boss!”
The judges said:
“This project demonstrates the wider input of retrofit into society and the benefits of thoughtful engagement. It gives the clearest vision of sector learning both regionally and nationally”
