The Unlock Net Zero Awards in partnership with BPF seek to celebrate and showcase the important work carried out by individuals, teams and organisations within the sector, shining a light on those who are leading the way with net zero solutions.

Green homes upgrade of the year

We want to reward exemplar examples of retrofitting existing homes, showcasing how the work employed has tackled the climate emergency and improved energy efficiency for occupiers of those homes. This category looks at multiple tenures of housing and invites entries from sheltered housing, build-to-rent, student, co-living and custom-built developments.

Supply chain partner of the year

Who are the organisations that are integral to supporting housing and the built environment sector deliver on its net zero ambitions. These are the real collaborators and partners that make things happen and ultimately become an extension of their customers teams adding value to their customers work to decarbonise.

Skills and training award

We need a skilled and knowledgeable workforce to deliver net zero. This award recognises those organisations who are training the workforce of today and attracting the workforce of tomorrow to deliver net zero across the housing and built environment sectors. Entries can be from in-house operations and educational establishments that are investing in and promoting talent development.

Engagement campaign of the year

We need to take people with us on the net zero journey so this award rewards those campaigns that have really resonated and made a difference to the success of a project/work stream by engaging tenants and residents in the climate change debate, helping to inform behaviour change which in turn helps to reduce climate impact.

 

Eligibility: this award will relate to campaigns carried out between January 2023 and March 2024

Innovation of the year

This award celebrates successful innovation benefiting the housing and built environment sectors in their decarbonisation journey. This can be a new approach to service provision, a new technology or a new way of working that helps to advance the net zero journey across the sectors. Entrants will need to demonstrate the impact of their innovation and their future plans to exploit further.

Biodiversity and nature award

We are looking for entries that demonstrate how they have enhanced a place/community through the active promotion of biodiversity and nature. This could be through the regeneration and rewilding of existing place and areas or through the inclusion of biodiversity and nature within new developments. What the entries will show is how they have incorporated the protection of nature and encouraged its use in further developments.

Collaboration of the year

Net Zero will only be delivered through collaboration and partnership working, so we are looking for examples of how projects have been delivered through true collaboration to make a lasting positive climate impact. Entries will articulate how the collaboration was put together and why they were stronger in delivery because of it.

Tenant or resident contribution to sustainable living

This category celebrates the activities of social housing residents or tenants who have made a significant contribution to tackling climate change within their communities or beyond. This can be through the delivery of specific projects or through sharing learnings of sustainability knowledge and projects.

Climate champion of the year

We are looking to celebrate the actions of an individual who has made a real positive contribution to positive climate action in their job. They will demonstrate an exceptional commitment to combatting climate change and show natural leadership in this area. We are looking to recognise an individual that has inspired others to act and can clearly evidence the impact of their work.

 

Eligibility: this award will relate to projects completed between January 2023 and March 2024

Company/organisation of the year

We want to reward organisations that are focused on delivering on the net zero agenda, clearly displayed through their actions across new build or retrofit projects. Net zero will be at the heart of their approach to business and they will be able to provide evidence of their impact, innovation and scalability of their net zero work for wider benefit.

Funding team of the year

Who is funding the decarbonised housing and built environment programmes? We want to recognise those teams and organisations that are supporting both the build of new low carbon developments alongside the retrofit of our existing property portfolios through innovative financing arrangements. This can be through both private and public sector initiatives.

Advisory team of the year

Who are the professional advisors making a real positive difference? This category recognises and rewards the work of agents and advisors who provide outstanding advice on sustainable buildings and developments. Who are the people that providers turn to for expertise and delivery?

ESG team of the year

Who are the teams driving forward the ESG agenda within their organisations and the sectors they work within. Who is driving forward positive change and sharing those learnings far and wide to deliver across all aspects of the ESG agenda to make for better working environments and a positive contribution to wider society?

Landlord of the year

We want to reward those landlords who have made a clear commitment to the net zero agenda and are delivering practically on the ground. Their work will have created and maintained net zero homes and places that benefit local communities. Entries are welcome from landlords who are accelerating the net zero carbon transitions across their assets and supply chain regardless of size and portfolios, so we welcome entries from housing associations, local authorities, for profit providers, build to rent owners and operators and student accommodation providers.

Building or development of the year

What are the real shining examples of new build developments that encompass a low carbon approach to construction and operation? Who has shown real ambition in their new developments. We want to profile those developments that are really great examples of what is achievable in a low carbon environment. This category is open to all developments from across student accommodation, later living, commercial real estate, build to rent, new build and housing association developments – they just need to clearly demonstrate the net zero element of the development.
