The Unlock Net Zero Awards seek to celebrate and showcase the important work carried out by individuals, teams and organisations within the sector, shining a light on those who are leading the way with net zero solutions.
Entries for 2025 are now closed. The shortlist will be announced in April 2025.
The retrofit of existing buildings that will still be in existence in 2050 is one of the challenges of our time. Retrofitting is increasing rapidly, and we want to reward exemplar examples of retrofitting existing homes, highlighting how the work employed has helped tackle the climate emergency and improved comfort and energy efficiency for occupiers of those homes. This category looks at multiple tenures of housing and invites entries from councils, housing associations, sheltered housing, build-to-rent, student, co-living and custom-built developments.

Who are the organisations that are integral to supporting housing and the built environment sector deliver on its net zero ambitions. These are the real collaborators and partners that make things happen and become an extension of their customers teams adding value to their customers work to decarbonise. These partners can span multiple stages of the supply chain.

We need a skilled and knowledgeable workforce to deliver a net zero transition. This award recognises those organisations who are training the workforce of today and attracting the workforce of tomorrow to deliver net zero across the housing and built environment sectors. Entries can be from in-house operations and educational establishments that are investing in and promoting talent development.

To make net zero aspirational we need to take people with us on the net zero journey. This award rewards those campaigns that have really resonated and made a difference to the success of a project/work stream by engaging tenants and residents in the climate change debate, helping to inform behaviour change which in turn helps to reduce climate impact.
Eligibility: this award will relate to campaigns carried out between January 2024 and March 2025
This award celebrates successful innovation benefiting the housing and built environment sectors in their decarbonisation journey. This can be a new approach to service provision, a new technology or a new way of working that helps to advance the net zero journey across the sectors. Entrants will need to demonstrate the impact of their innovation and their plans to exploit further.
Eligibility: this award will relate to projects and developments completed between January 2024 and March 2025
Building in partnership with nature will be a key part of the net zero transition. We are looking to reward projects that demonstrate how they have enhanced a place/community through the active promotion of biodiversity and nature. This could be through the regeneration and rewilding of existing places or through the inclusion of biodiversity and nature within new developments. What the entries will need to demonstrate is how they have incorporated the protection of nature and encouraged its use in further developments.
Eligibility: this award will relate to projects and developments carried out between January 2024 and March 2025
Net Zero is a collective challenge that needs collective solutions. It will only be delivered through partnership working, so we are looking for examples of how projects have been delivered through true collaboration to make a lasting positive climate impact. Entries will articulate how the collaboration was put together and why they were stronger in delivery because of it.

We want to reward organisations and leadership teams that are focused on delivering on the net zero agenda, clearly displayed through their actions. Net zero will be at the heart of their approach to business and they will be able to provide evidence of their impact, innovation, and scalability of their net zero work for wider benefit.

Who is funding the net zero transition and supporting decarbonised housing and built environment programmes? We want to recognise those teams and organisations that are supporting both the build of new low carbon developments alongside the retrofit of our existing property portfolios through innovative financing arrangements. This can be through both private and public sector initiatives.

We want to reward those landlords who have made a clear commitment to the net zero agenda and are delivering. Their work will have created and maintained net zero homes and places that benefit local communities. Entries are welcome from landlords who are accelerating the net zero carbon transitions across their assets and supply chain regardless of size and portfolios, so we welcome entries from councils, housing associations, local authorities, for profit providers, build to rent owners and operators and student accommodation providers.

This category will celebrate the achievement of excellence in the design, construction, and operational sustainability of new building developments. It will recognise projects that have successfully integrated environmental responsibility with innovation, creating buildings that minimise environmental impact while also enhancing the quality of life for their users.

This category recognises the contractor who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to sustainability in their work. It will honour a contractor who consistently integrates environmentally responsible practices across all phases of their projects, from planning and design to construction, operation, and maintenance. They will exemplify leadership in reducing environmental impacts, improving resource efficiency, and championing green building practices.
