The trip was organised in collaboration with Energiesprong UK to support the bootcamp’s syllabus, which is being delivered in partnership between Keele University and the Sustainable Housing Action Partnership (SHAP).

The bootcamp cohort heard presentations from Energiesprong UK and Melius Homes before touring the factory and visiting the NCH 2050 Homes project in the centre of Nottingham – the UK’s first Energiesprong project.

Tom Bedford, Net Zero & Smart Energy training manager at Keele University, said:

“In our recent research we noted that construction is normally "the employer of last resort" but exciting innovation at Melius has changed that with a purpose-driven business model that genuinely supports the needs of local people.”

Robert Lambe, chief executive at Melius Homes, added:

“Retrofit of existing homes is a critical aspect of our net zero challenge, but it also impacts directly on the lives of the people living in the homes and within the local community, so it’s great that Keele University and SHAP are running a course focused on the placemaking aspect of retrofit.”

Ele George, collaboration manager at Energiesprong UK, said:

“Energiesprong UK is an independent, 100 per cent publicly funded not-for-profit organisation. Our mission is to develop a volume market that can deliver net zero energy retrofit and new build, at scale without public subsidy. Bringing these learners to see first-hand this industrialised solution and to witness the manufacturing of a sustainable and scalable solution is at the heart of this.”
