Wickes has developed a responsible business strategy called "Built to Last"

The challenge

Through its responsible business strategy, ‘Built to Last’, Wickes has committed to support the fight against climate change and take action to protect the environment.

The company is taking steps to improve energy efficiency and reduce waste on its premises. It is also making a concerted effort to source materials and products from environmentally responsible suppliers and manufacturers.

Alongside this, Wickes has set an objective to help customers make their homes more sustainable. It now offers advice on energy efficient home improvements and promotes energy saving measures.

Information is shared across the Wickes website

The solution

Since December 2022, Wickes has been using independent and verified facts and figures from Infact, Energy Saving Trust’s up-to-date domestic energy insights kit, in its marketing.

Through these insights, Wickes can show customers the potential savings they could gain from making specific home energy improvements.

The insights feature in the Energy Saving Advice section of the Wickes website, in targeted emarketing campaigns, and in Wickes’ Season Ahead articles.

Wickes also uses Energy Saving Trust’s Verified trademark, which means its customers can be confident that the figures are independent and impartial. The facts and figures are verified but Energy Saving Trust do not endorse specific products.

Wickes uses the data in a variety of formats.

This is how the facts have been used on the Energy Saving Advice section of its customer facing website.

Wickes has also used Energy Saving Trust’s insights in its ‘The Season Ahead’ articles, including:

Teresa Paul, Sustainability category development director at Wickes, says:

“We’re pleased to be working with Energy Saving Trust who can provide our customers with expert, trusted advice on energy efficiency and low carbon energy solutions to help them make their homes more energy efficient.”

What’s next?

Wickes plans to be a net zero business by 2040 and has set near-term science-based targets which have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. These are:

  • to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42% by 2030, compared to 2021
  • for 45% of suppliers by emissions to have science-based targets by 2027
  • to reduce absolute scope 3 emissions from the use of sold products by 42% by 2030, compared to 2021

Wickes recognises that protecting the environment isn’t just about reducing its carbon emissions. It’s how resources like water are used efficiently, how waste is reduced and managed, and how natural environments and biodiversity are preserved.
