In just a few weeks we will be heading up to Manchester for Europe’s largest housing festival, Housing 2023, and once again the Unlock Net Zero Live stage will return to the show floor for three days of debate and discussion around the HOW of the net zero transition.
On the stage this year we are theming the days into Action, Urgency and Solutions at Scale. There is a lot of good intentioned debate and discussion about what needs to happen to make the transition to net zero a reality, but it is becoming essential that we begin to take action and action now.
On the Tuesday (27th June), our day centred on action starts by looking at how we can deliver liveable, carbon free places. Decarbonising the home is important but so is making sure the rest of our estates are zero carbon as well – that includes our workspaces, leisure and retail, the public estate and the infrastructure that supports and connects all of them.
We will also be looking at how we can remove complexity from climate change engagement, how joined up approaches can tackle both carbon reduction and the issue of damp and mould across social housing portfolios. We will spend time discussing how we fund decarbonisation costs and round the first day off by looking at how we use good quality data to improve standards and help us to get retrofitting right.
That evening, we are very much looking forward to celebrating the great work that has been done so far across the UK housing sector to decarbonise, as we unveil the winners at the first ever Unlock Net Zero Live Awards.
We start the Wednesday of our programme, which turns the spotlight on the urgency required in the net zero transition with a discussion on climate policy landscape including Selvin Brown the director for net zero homes at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. During the day we will also look at how we deliver new low and zero carbon homes at scale and how we constructively collaborate across academia, communities, government, and industry on this specific topic.
We will examine how we use innovation and finance to help accelerate the roll out of heat pumps, use data effectively to help inform net zero decision making whilst also using one of the sessions to reflect on what we have learnt from the delivery of wave one projects under the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund.
The third and final day is going to look at how we can develop solutions at scale. In some way it is not just about the technology itself but more about how we can quickly ramp up the implementation of such technology, especially when we know there are around 28 million properties in the UK which will need a level of retrofitting by 2050.
This means we must look at the skills and training needed to deliver net zero, not just today but also how we make roles aspirational to attract the next generation of school leavers and university graduates. We will explore the role of unlocking investment into social housing through ESG and how we can help eliminate fuel poverty using greater energy efficiency measures.
We will look at the practical ways of how we can adapt homes to cope with the impact of climate change alongside exploring the practical solutions that can be employed when faced with hard to decarbonise homes. And we will finish off the three days with a session on how we ramp up electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the UK, through homes and beyond.
With over 8,300 delegates in attendance, it is still not too late to join us. If you subscribe to this portal you have the opportunity to claim a free visitor pass which will provide you with access to the Unlock Net Zero Live stage.
We would love it if you could join us.
