NatWest Group becomes the latest member of Bankers for Net Zero the UK Country Chapter of the UN's Net Zero Banking Alliance

Bankers for Net Zero was formed in 2019 with the aim of galvanising leadership from the UK banking sector on climate change through a focus on strategic policy alignment.  By collaborating across business, finance and government, the alliance aims to explore how the banking sector can help de-risk the net zero transition and work to ensure policy, regulation and finance are all playing their part in enabling key industries of the UK economy to transform.

NatWest Group was the first UK bank, and one of the largest banks globally to date, to have science-based targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. These targets are used to underpin the bank’s climate transition plan which outlines the steps NatWest Group aims to take to at least halve the climate impact of its financing activity by 2030.

Heather Buchanan, director and co-founder, Bankers for Net Zero said:

“We are thrilled to welcome NatWest Group, a leading bank on tackling climate change, into the alliance and we can’t wait to start putting all our ideas and intentions into action. Banks and the business community have a real responsibility to push forward the decarbonisation agenda to help and support both retail and business customers as well as the wider UK economy. But the just transition to a net zero economy will not happen without the support of the financial services sector.”

James Close, head of Climate Change at NatWest Group, said:

“At NatWest Group we are determined to support our customers and help to grow a sustainable economy in the UK, which is why we’re pleased to be joining the Bankers for Net Zero initiative. Unlocking and mobilising the finance needed to support the UK’s transition to net zero will require the sector to de-risk the transition and ensure that policy, regulation and finance are all playing their part in enabling the UK economy to transform itself. Bankers for Net Zero provides a complementary platform for banks to work together to address the climate challenge. We look forward to getting stuck in to support the group to drive change and leverage existing initiatives including the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero and the Transition Plan Taskforce.”
