The Victoria Road council house scheme developed by Brighton & Hove City Council was selected as the winner of the Building/development of the year by a housing association or local authority category at the first Unlock Net Zero Live Awards
Announced at a ceremony held at Housing 2023 and hosted by Unlock Net Zero ambassador Kunle Barker, this category featured projects that have delivered in line with some or all of the areas highlighted within the construction playbook: net zero/environmental strategy, supply-chain decarbonisation, digital and MMC, waste and resource efficiency. The category which showcased projects and developments completed between January 2021 and March 2023 proved so popular that it was split between housing association or local authority projects and those delivered solely by the private sector.
The judges said of the Victoria Road submission:
"We were very impressed by the broad approach to sustainability across the project lifecycle. From resident engagement to shape design through to design & construction for low WLC through to the community learning. In particular user engagement focus from academia is a key industry need so we were impressed by the opportunity from this."
Highly commended in this category was The Bluebird Project in Southend from HARP, the Homeless Action Resource Project. The judges said:
"We wanted to highly commend this project as it delivers enormous social value on the need for housing for the homeless with a focus on well-being while considering the wider environmental impact as an integrated part of the design. It should be recognised to encourage others to see the potential for homelessness and environmental sustainability working together."
