This report is our contribution to knowledge sharing

Running a city is complex. Successful placemaking is complex. Regeneration is complex. Addressing the housing crisis is complex. Decarbonising our energy system and economy is complex. We need solutions that work across multiple boundaries, and collective thinking to deliver on all these agendas. We must work together for the benefit of local communities and adopt a holistic approach to these issues.

There is a lot of great work underway and the way we will deliver a successful outcome for all is by sharing our knowledge because this is a collective challenge that requires a collective solution.

We want this report to contribute to this knowledge sharing.

Some of our key reflections from this work that is explored in further detail in the report is that:

  • We should take a place-based approach to net zero, providing solutions tailored to local requirements
  • The solutions will differ by region, there is no one size fits all solution for net zero
  • The growing importance of developing local area energy plans to help build healthy prosperous cities based on a solid evidence base
  • We need to focus on action, and we need to learn from each other’s actions
  • Net zero needs to become a “business as usual” activity not a special stand-alone project
  • Early engagement with language that resonates with people’s lives is required to engage communities
  • We need to develop collective thinking and a change in mindset to deliver this ambitious agenda
