Work underway on new eco-friendly housing scheme in Chelmsford
Housing association CHP has started work on 12 new affordable and environmentally sustainable homes at Woodhall Road in Chelmsford, in partnership with Chelmsford City Council (CCC).
The development is made up of one bed flats and two-, three- and four-bedroom houses all for social rent, helping to meet local housing need. CCC has transferred the site to CHP for the development. CHP will own and manage the properties with CCC nominating people to live in them.
In line with CHP’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy, the properties will be built using factory made timber frame panels. All properties will have air source heat pumps and photovoltaic panels fitted, which will help make the homes more energy efficient. Infrastructure for the future provision of electric car charging points will also be installed across the site.
To protect local wildlife, bird and bat boxes are to be installed along with hedgehog highways. Native grass and hedge species will be used in communal plant areas across the site.
Cllr. Stephen Robinson, leader of Chelmsford City Council said,
"We are delighted to work with CHP to deliver this fully social rent development. These genuinely affordable properties are key to helping us to address the housing crisis in our area. We aim to have more such projects in future, as outlined in our new Housing Strategy."

The homes are due to be completed by the end of March 2023.
